What is a Social Media Monitoring Tool?

A social media monitoring tool is a solution to keep track of what people are saying about your brand, competitors, or industry across social platforms. It does not require manual feed refreshes since the tool automatically collects mentions of keywords and hashtags, and monitors conversations in real time, turning them into actionable insights.

But if we put mentions aside, a good social media monitoring tool shows you context, which is way more valuable now. It gives you a clear picture of whether the conversation is positive or negative, whether people are generally happy, sad, or angry about a specific topic, and whether things are about to turn into a PR nightmare.

A reliable monitoring tool should point out who’s driving the conversation and where it is gaining traction. Because sometimes the intention is fine, but the internet decides otherwise in about five minutes.

Take McDonald’s Netherlands, for example. In December 2025, the brand released an AI-generated holiday ad called “It’s the Most Terrible Time of the Year”. The campaign was meant to be funny, but social media users, especially on Reddit and other online communities, didn’t exactly find it festive.

The backlash snowballed fast, and before long, the story had moved from social chatter to mainstream media coverage, including The Guardian. McDonald’s eventually pulled the ad.

That’s the whole point of social media monitoring in PR. You don’t want to discover a problem once it becomes a headline. You want to catch it while it’s still just a thread.

Safe to say, this was not the kind of holiday coverage McDonald’s had in mind.

12 Best Social Media Monitoring Tools Reviewed for 2026 & Our Honest Opinion

If you’ve ever tried to choose a social media monitoring tool, you already know how messy it gets. Every platform claims “AI-powered insights” and “real-time monitoring,” and somehow they all sound the same, until you actually start digging.

So, instead of repeating feature lists from landing pages (you can do this on your own), we focused on how these tools perform in the real world for specific use cases that should narrow your search.

Our research is based on recent data only, and we brushed G2 reviews from 2026, fresh Reddit discussions, and actual user experiences from PR and marketing teams who are using these tools daily.

Below, you’ll find 12 of the best social media monitoring tools for 2026, reviewed based on how they actually perform today, not on what their homepages promise.

  1. Mentionlytics: Best for PR Agencies

Mentionlytics is an AI-powered social media monitoring tool with a wide range of sources, providing accurate information about a brand’s online reputation. It’s easy to use, accurate, and highly customizable.

Mentionlytics overview dashboard updated

Our honest opinion

This is one of the few tools that provides accuracy, multi-channel sources, and an affordable price. Typically, you have to be short somewhere, but with Mentionlytics, you get monitoring on Reddit and all social media platforms, forums, YouTube, and podcasts.

On top of that, you have highly customizable dashboards and reports (an excellent solution for agencies with lots of clients), and AI-powered features (SIA, Anomaly Detection Alerts, AI Image Recognition, etc.) that make it easy to translate raw data into actionable insights.

What we found in our tests

Strong multi-source monitoring (including podcasts, which are becoming an evergreen thing), real-time alerts, convenient dashboards, and customizable reports. You can even use mEMV to calculate estimated earned media value and justify your PR or marketing budget.

Key features

Pricing

Mentionlytics plans start at $69 a month, but we often offer time-limited discounts, so you can find it for $58, and have a 14-day free trial.

Try Mentionlytics for FREE

Pros

  • Wide range of channels
  • Actionable insights based on collected mentions
  • Easy influencer identification with the Top Mentioners feature to find niche creators, not only the celebrities

Cons

  • Limits on keyword rules, mentions, update frequency, and users for lower-tier plans
  • Requires time to completely understand this monitoring tool to get the best of it
  • Might be overwhelming at first due to the number of available features

Best for

Mentionlytics is best for PR agencies with multiple clients that focus on monitoring online brand reputation.

  1. Hootsuite & Talkwalker: Best for Large Marketing Teams

Hootsuite (with Talkwalker integration) is a combination of social media management and advanced social listening. It’s designed for teams that want publishing, monitoring, and analytics in one place, but it comes at a cost, both financially and in terms of complexity.

Screenshot of Talkwalker homepage

Our honest opinion

This setup shows up a lot in enterprise environments, but almost always with the same pattern: powerful, but not exactly simple.

Hootsuite handles scheduling, engagement, and reporting well, but when it comes to actual listening, users often say it’s not enough on its own. That’s why the Talkwalker integration is there to spice things up. On the flip side, Talkwalker offers strong data coverage, but it adds another layer of complexity, and the interface can feel non-intuitive.

So yes, you get everything, but you’ll probably need time (and patience) to actually use it properly.

What we found in our tests

We knew that Hootsuite is more of a management tool that brings workflows. Talkwalker, on the other hand, brings serious listening power. And everything is covered, but the complexity might feel overwhelming. You need patience and to be prepared for a learning curve.

If you conquer the complexity, you will find that some features are stunning, but what stood out the most during our test is that you could see the combo of traditional and social media monitoring in one place.

Key features

  • Social media monitoring & publishing
  • Trend tracking and alerts
  • Visual and audio recognition
  • Cross-platform monitoring (30+ networks)
  • Custom dashboards and reports

Pricing

Talkwalker pricing is quote-based, and there are no reliable Reddit posts recently to confirm any specific price. If you’ve already got your quote, but are not quite satisfied with it, you should check Talkwalker alternatives or opt for one of the Hootsuite alternatives if you’re focusing more on the social media management aspect.

Pros

  • Niche social monitoring
  • Visual analytics
  • Advanced image/visual recognition

Cons

  • Enterprise-only pricing
  • Steep learning curve
  • Result limits

Best for

Large PR and marketing teams that need both publishing and advanced monitoring in one ecosystem.

  1. Brandwatch: Enterprise Tool for Deep Audience Insights

Brandwatch is a well-known platform focused on data depth, analytics, and large-scale monitoring. It’s widely used in enterprise environments where teams need detailed insights across millions of data points.

Screenshot of Brandwatch homepage

Our honest opinion

Is it deep? Yes, it is. Does it offer many useful features? Yes, it does. Is the price spicy? Yes, it is. Well, everything comes with a cost, and Brandwatch is a tool typically used by big enterprises handling thousands of mentions, so it fits their budget.

What we found in our tests

If you want deep insights, this delivers. If you want something quick and simple… this is not that. Brandwatch is one of those tools where the power is not the problem, but the time it takes to actually use it properly is.

If you are new to social media monitoring or use “user-friendlier” tools, you might get a bit lost when you enter Brandwatch and see all the features. And if you don’t set your parameters right, you’re going to get a bunch of alerts that are not so valuable to your brand. So, this tool is definitely not for beginners.

On the bright side, they have great AI features (Iris AI) that provide actionable insights, and their dashboards and reports are highly customizable.

Key features

  • Advanced sentiment and analytics
  • Historical data tracking
  • Custom dashboards
  • Audience insights
  • Trend detection

Pricing

Enterprise-level pricing, which is often described as high on Reddit and not publicly transparent. And if you’re looking for something within a smaller budget, you’ll need to check some budget-friendly Brandwatch alternatives.

Pros

  • Extremely detailed analytics
  • Strong data coverage
  • Flexible dashboards

Cons

  • Steep learning curve
  • Expensive
  • Requires time to get value

Best for

Enterprise teams that need deep analytics and have the resources to use them.

  1. Meltwater: PR and Media Monitoring in One Place

Meltwater is one of the most established tools in PR, combining media monitoring and analytics on a single platform.

Screenshot of Meltwater homepage

Our honest opinion

If you’re a PR agency focused on traditional press coverage and monitoring, Meltwater would probably be your best choice. With that being said, we have to mention that this tool is in the higher-tier group in terms of price, so you often see users’ comments such as “if you can afford it”.

What we found in our tests

Wow, what a media database… probably more than 1 million individuals, including journalists, editors, and broadcasters, and 270,000 news sources across more than 120 countries. Of course, not all journalists from the list are active (you’ll find some outdated info alongside), but in general, that’s an impressive database, and very useful for traditional media press.

In addition to this large base of contacts, you have social media monitoring features that provide insights into your brand’s online reputation. Very convenient, two in one.

Now, the flip side: search could have been slightly friendlier, and customizing reports isn’t the easiest click-click-click procedure.

Key features

  • AI-powered writing and pitching
  • Influencer discovery with Klear
  • Custom news digest builder
  • Spike alerts
  • Social media management (through Engage)

Pricing

The pricing is quote-based, but it’s estimated that the essential plan costs around $7,000 a year for one user. So if you’re looking for less expensive options, you’ll need to opt for Meltwater alternatives.

Pros

  • All-in-one tool
  • Deep analysis and tracking
  • Large media database

Cons

  • Outdated info in media lists
  • Too many clicks for a simple task
  • Boolean search might give wrong results if not set up correctly

Best for

PR teams that need media monitoring and PR outreach in one tool.

Try a Budget-Friendly Alternative

Mentionlytics is your go-to solution. Standing out features and exceptional accuracy!

  1. Agorapulse & Mention: Best for Mid-Size Companies and Small Marketing Teams

Agorapulse and Mention (now integrated) fall into that category of tools people usually discover after getting tired of overly complex platforms. They cover monitoring, engagement, and reporting in a very simple way.

Screenshot of Agorapulse dashboard from our testing

Our honest opinion

It’s easy to use, simple as it can be. Perfect for beginners or small teams just wanting to stay updated on what’s going on online around their brand. A special plus is that you have a free trial without a demo requirement (which has become a trend).

What we found in our tests

Mention by Agorapulse is so easy to use that you don’t even have to be an expert to manage the data. What was refreshing was that you can always change your keyword settings if you find your results a bit off. It’s right there, in front of you. No need to wander around the app and look for it with a magnifying glass.

So on a scale of 1 to 10 of user experience and simplicity (in a good way), I give them 11!

Okay, it doesn’t have a wide coverage, might not catch everything you’re searching for, and it definitely doesn’t have fancy AI features, but for basic monitoring and engagement in one tool, it’s an excellent choice.

Key features

  • Listening alerts
  • Intuitive interface
  • Scheduling and engagement
  • Social Media ROI
  • Downloadable reports

Pricing

Agorapulse offers a free plan with limited features, and the lowest plan starts at $99 per user per month, but if you want to explore more complex tools, you might want to check Agorapulse alternatives.

Pros

  • Beginners-friendly
  • Easy to correct setup
  • Engagement and social mentions in one place

Cons

  • Less customization when it comes to reporting
  • Basic features
  • Not easy to track if you have a large number of mentions

Best for

Small marketing teams that want basic monitoring and smooth social media management under one roof.

  1. Muck Rack & Keyhole: Journalist Database with Social Listening

Muck Rack was the primary PR platform, but with Keyhole integrated, it also covers social media monitoring. Impressive and updated media list with extensions for press release, LLM visibility, and broadcast and printed media access.

Screenshot of Muck Rack homepage

Our honest opinion

Some 15 years ago, Muck Rack started as just a PR platform, but two years ago, it acquired Keyhole. The only problem is that social media monitoring is not part of the plans, but an add-on. To be honest, yes, Muck Rack has whatever you need, but if you want all of that in your package, the price might go a bit higher than you expected.

What we found in our tests

Impressive media list, have to admit. But if you’re aiming to get brand or competitor monitoring, be prepared for an add-on. This was a bit of a surprise for me, but it seems that Muck Rack is still primarily focused on media outlets and lists, and that’s what their basic plans contain.

Key features

  • AI Media List Builder
  • Generative Pulse
  • Spike notifications
  • Pitch-to-coverage attribution
  • Integrated online articles monitoring  (through Keyhole)

Pricing

The price is not publicly available, but according to Reddit users, the basic agency plan starts around $4,000 per seat per user.

Pros

  • Updated journalist list
  • Intuitive UX
  • Excellent support

Cons

  • No monthly contract option
  • Brand, competitor, and topic monitoring are add-ons
  • Media intelligence is also an add-on

Best for

PR teams that want a large and updated media database.

  1. Vista Social: Social Media Management with Social Listening Extension

Vista Social (or Social Vista, as users call it) is a social media management tool with the option of social media monitoring.

Screenshot of Vista Social dashboard from our testing

Our honest opinion

Vista can handle multiple accounts or platforms, and it’s great if you have multiple employees dealing with publishing and replying. Easy to schedule and even easier to publish content on your social media. But when it comes to social media monitoring, it’s not as comprehensive as you might be used to with other tools.

What we found in our tests

It’s most often the first choice for publishing content online due to its intuitive UX and useful features, including time zone scheduling, AI-driven content creation, and a media library.

As for social monitoring, note that this feature is not included in the plan you buy; it’s an extension you pay for separately. Tracking only your profile activities is within the plan, but if you want to hear what’s happening in the industry, what trends are evolving, you need a bigger budget.

Key features

  • Content creation and scheduling
  • Automated DMs
  • Tracking reviews and replying to them
  • Wide range of social platforms
  • Reports

Pricing

Vista Social is transparent about pricing, and its basic plan starts at $79 per month, with a 14-day free trial. The social media monitoring feature (socials, news, web) is an additional $75 a month.

Pros

  • Intuitive UX
  • Social media management
  • Automated DM responses

Cons

  • Monitoring is limited without additional payment
  • Lack of customization
  • AI credit limit

Best for

Content creators and social-first brands due to its useful social media management features.

  1. Sprout Social: Best for Enterprise-Level Companies and Organizations

Sprout Social is one of the tools everyone knows for its strong social media monitoring capabilities. It has a combined dashboard that offers insights into your social accounts and customized topics related to your brand.

Screenshot of Sprout Social dashboard from our testing

Our honest opinion

It’s neat. It has all the features that make a social media manager’s life easier, including posting, scheduling, creating, and replying. As for social media monitoring, it has an interesting feature that lets you create a topic to track and gives you the exact number of active posts on the selected platforms at that time. The only problem is the budget you need to have for all the features you want to use.

What we found in our tests

So, it’s not that it doesn’t have the features; it has all you need in one tool, from creating to posting, replying, and tracking. On top of that, you have social media monitoring, which is, apparently, an additional feature (surprise, surprise). But if we put aside the initial shock, the idea behind this feature is great.

You can set the topics with keywords you want to track, and you can get insights every time you open the tool — how many mentions of a specific topic, what keywords prevailed, profiles that used a specific keyword, what’s their reach, and automatically the potential impressions.

This is great for companies that can afford the full set of features (preferably with the advanced plan). Others might want to look for some more affordable Sprout Social alternatives.

Key features

  • Influencer discovery
  • Smart inbox with AI prioritization
  • Topic monitoring
  • Templates for social media monitoring setup
  • Competitive analysis and reports

Pricing

The Basic plan starts at $199 per seat per month, and it offers a 30-day free trial. But that plan doesn’t include any social media monitoring. You get 10 branded keywords tracked in the Standard plan ($299 per seat per month), and if you want social media monitoring analytics (including topic-based), you need to increase your budget to at least $999 per month.

Pros

  • Unified social media management analytics
  • Seamless integration (Slack, Salesforce, etc)
  • Model Context Protocol (MCP) for AI models connection

Cons

  • Social media monitoring is additionally charged
  • Locked features
  • No full white-label dashboards

Best for

Best for enterprise-level organizations, corporations, and premium agencies.

Not Having Exactly an Enterprise-Level Budget?

No worries, Mentionlytics meets all your needs without breaking the bank.

  1. BuzzSumo: Best Content Ideas Tracker

BuzzSumo is a tool built for content discovery, and has a bit of a different approach to social media monitoring by focusing on content, whether it’s your branded content or viral topics (or products) on social platforms, forums, and Amazon.

Screenshot of BuzzSumo homepage

Our honest opinion

It’s an excellent tool if you need quick access to hot topics, and a recipe for viral content. It offers an easy way to discover influencers that fit your brand perfectly, and find inspiration for your next content piece.

What we found in our tests

As you might expect, BuzzSumo has no feature for scheduling posts (which is normal, since the tool focuses on social media content analytics). And as for that part, we’re pretty much impressed by how they present trending topics. Easy to navigate and to find inspiration for potentially viral content.

It’s also valuable for competitor analysis, since you can track your competitors, see what they post online, how their audience reacts, and which ideas you might use (and which to avoid).

Now, on the other hand, it’s a pretty expensive tool considering its narrow focus, and you might feel a bit frustrated seeing that you got a message, but you need to jump on a social media platform or some other tool to reply.

Key features

  • Content analyzer
  • Trending tool
  • Backlink mapping
  • Question analyzer
  • YouTube analyzer

Pricing

The price starts at $199 per month for one user, and it offers a free 14-day trial.

Pros

  • Finding what’s working
  • Influencer discovery
  • Competitor analysis

Cons

  • Limited action features (no posting or engagement capabilities)
  • Pricing
  • Search limits

Best for

Creators and content strategists, or SEO strategists.

  1. Zoho Social: Best for SMBs and Zoho Ecosystem Users

Zoho is primarily known for its CRM, but they’ve also built a unique ecosystem that includes Zoho Desk, Project, Mail, and Zoho Social. That makes this tool unique from a project management aspect. You have the whole circle from leads to closing the deal under one umbrella.

Screenshot of Zoho social dashboard from our testing

Our honest opinion

Zoho Social is the ultimate “value-for-money” champion, especially for those already embedded in the Zoho CRM ecosystem. And while it excels at streamlined scheduling and lead tracking, it lacks the deep, AI-driven “web-wide” listening and high-level sentiment analysis required by global enterprise brands.

What we found in our tests

It was a surprisingly good experience. Nothing spectacular regarding social monitoring depth, but you can have more keyword tracking, alongside social media management features, which is totally fine if you don’t pay attention to sentiment and emotion analysis or look for any kind of deep analysis feature.

It has customizable reports with available features that mostly revolve around your own profile, the most significant followers you have, what kind of engagement your posts have, and based on all of these segments, you can see how your future posts will perform as a prediction.

Key features

  • Scheduling content publishing
  • Approvals workflow
  • Basic keyword tracking
  • Customizable reports
  • RSS feed

Pricing

Zoho Social has a free plan, with basic social media management features, and all plans have a 15-day free trial.

Pros

  • Unbeatable pricing
  • User-friendly interface
  • Robust reporting

Cons

  • Basic social media monitoring
  • Limited advanced analytics
  • Zia (AI for content creation) available with your OpenAI key

Best for

SMBs or those who already use the Zoho ecosystem.

  1. Socialinsider: Best for Client-Ready Reporting

Socialinsider is a specialized analytics platform that streamlines reporting on social media engagement and deep competitor benchmarking. Aggregating data from platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and LinkedIn into a single, cohesive dashboard allows marketing teams to bypass the manual labor of data collection.

Screenshot of Socialinsider dashboard from our testing

Our honest opinion

Socialinsider is a great reporting tool for anyone who needs to prove their social media performance against competitors without manually scraping data. But you’ll find that its social media monitoring isn’t very strong, and it lacks publishing features.

What we found in our tests

It looks simple at first glance, and once you create your project, you can see how the audience perceives your profile through engagement. But if you want a comprehensive package for managing profiles and monitoring, you will find gaps.

For example, limitations regarding social media monitoring (token limits for a specific social platform, such as X during our test), and at one point, you might get the wrong impression that no one is mentioning your keyword if you don’t pay attention to notifications on the screen. Another challenge is that the platform could automatically put your brand (project) into a specific topic that does not resonate with the actual industry you’re in.

Key features

  •  AI-powered executive summaries
  • Competitor benchmarking
  • Organic Value Calculator
  • Cross-channel analysis
  • Historical data

Pricing

Social Insider price starts at $99 per month (one-seat plan) and offers a free trial.

Pros

  • Clean interface
  • Great support
  • Client-ready reports

Cons

  • No publishing features and inbox
  • API restrictions (limits)
  • Overall cost

Best for

Data-driven social media managers and competitive intelligence teams.

  1. Emplifi: Best for Global Corporations

Emplifi  is an enterprise-grade AI platform that unifies social media marketing, customer care, and commerce into a single “command center.” It is best known for its unlimited user model and advanced AI co-pilots that automate high-volume workflows.

Screenshot of Emplifi homepage

Our honest opinion

Emplifi is a “beast” for large-scale operations, offering deep, integrated insights that many mid-market tools simply can’t match.

What we found in our tests

In our research, we found that its unified dashboard is exceptional for providing a single truth for global teams. However, it is not plug-and-play. The steep learning curve and complex onboarding mean it’s only worth the investment if you have a large team (20+) to justify the high starting cost.

Key features

  • AI Query Copilot
  • Unified AI inbox
  • Social ROI and predictions
  • UGC collecting
  • AI data summaries

Pricing

The price starts at $1,249 per month.

Pros

  • Unlimited users
  • Reporting
  • Robust API access

Cons

  • High price
  • Steep learning curve
  • Might feel too heavy

Best for

Global corporations and large teams.

Enterprise-Level Tool Doesn’t Have to Come With Enterprise-Level Price!

Mentionlytics is an excellent choice for large teams and multiple channels, and it comes with an acceptable price for every company’s budget.

How to Choose the Right Social Media Monitoring Tool for Your Business

By now, it’s probably clear: there’s no “perfect” social media monitoring tool. Just tools that fit your workflow… and tools that make you question your life choices after onboarding.

Infographic about the benefits of social media monitoring

The right choice depends on what you actually need. If you want to do LinkedIn monitoring, you should focus on tools that cover this channel.

Not what the demo showed. Not what the sales team promised. What you’ll use on a random Tuesday when things go sideways. So if X is where your target audience is, X monitoring is your primary method.

Here’s what’s worth paying attention to:

  • Real-time alerts: Can you catch a problem early, or will you read about it later in the news?
  • Source coverage: Does it monitor just Instagram and X? Think Reddit, news, forums, YouTube, and even tracking Telegram.
  • Sentiment analysis: Not just “positive/negative,” but something accurate enough to trust.
  • Ease of use: If it takes weeks to learn, you won’t use it properly.
  • Reporting & dashboards: Can you actually send this to a client without fixing it first?
  • AI insights: Helpful summaries, anomaly detection, and trend spotting (not just buzzwords).
  • Scalability: Will it still work when your brand (or crisis) grows?
  • Pricing vs value: Are you using 80% of what you’re paying for… or just 20%?

At the end of the day, the best tool is the one you’ll actually use and trust when it matters.
